Industrial network segmentation

Control data flows and limit attack paths without harming operations.

Architecture

Effective segmentation begins with assets, process owners, and essential flows—not merely installing a firewall.

An industrial DMZ hosts intermediary services to reduce direct communication between enterprise and control networks.

Design should be phased, reversible, and supported by boundary monitoring and periodic rule review.

Before change, actual flows among engineering workstations, HMIs, historians, domain services, and enterprise systems are recorded so rules are not based on assumptions or overly broad ports.

After implementation, allowed and denied paths, logging, failure scenarios, and emergency access must be tested; segmentation has value only when operations can sustain it.
